Num Kom is a traditional rice cake made from simple ingredients such as glutinous rice flour with palm sugar, grated coconut and toasted sesame seeds. This soft-textured treat is perfect for breakfast or a quick snack during the day.

Ingredients

  • A cup of glutinous rice flour

  • Warm water

  • Five cups of freshly grated coconut

  • Four teaspoons black sesame seeds

  • Half a cup of palm sugar

  • Pinch of salt

  • Banana leaves

Preparation

  • Toast the sesame seeds over a low heat, then turn off the heat and add the grated coconut and palm sugar.

  • Mix the ingredients

  • Mix the salt, warm water and glutinous rice flour until a dough forms

  • Form the dough into balls

  • Place the filling in the balls of dough

  • Place the cakes in the centre of the cut banana leaf and shape it into a pyramid.

  • Steam the cakes for 15 minutes
